A feel good story!

A couple of weeks back we got high value Similac coupons. One for $5/1 and one for $3/1 Similac products. I don't use formula but clip them for friends or to trade. Krazy Coupon Lady clued me into the nearly free price at Walmart for the premixed 32 oz bottled of sensitive formula. I decided to use my coupons myself. I purchased 5 bottles at $0.84 each and 6 bottles at $0.50 each. Then we dropped them off at the food bank. I enjoy sharing our excess with the food bank at various drives but this was the first time I bought something solely to donate. I figured, I donate canned goods at that price all the time and baby's need to eat too.
My darling husband ran it into the food bank. He returned with a feel good story that nearly brought tears to my eyes. The ladies oohed and aah-ed over the formula. They shared how desperately they need formula and seldom get it. They were currently out, of course, and a mom had come in the day before asking for some.
They had to turn her and her baby away!
It nearly broke my heart. I had waited one day to take that formula in! DANG IT!
They were so thrilled to have more formula and even more thrilled that it was for sensitive bellies. I wished I had more of those coupons to share. I do however have some enfamil coupons, so now I am on the hunt for a bargain on Enfamil to donate.
So many of us are surviving and something so little could make a huge difference for a little someone. If you have any of these coupons rush out, buy some formula for pennies and take it straight to your local food bank.
THEY NEED IT!
I can't tell you how good I felt as we pulled away. My heart was touched.
Service- pass it on!

Why do I need 5 copies of the paper?

When you really want to make the most of your coupon trips you need multiple copies of your coupons. That means (usually) multiple copy's of the paper. WHY? you ask....
Nine boxes of dishwasher cleaner, regularly $4.99. On sale for $2.99- $2.25 coupon= stock up time! Nine for less than the price of 2!!
So that when you get a great coupon, mixed with a great sale you can stock up for pennies.
I'm loving it!

My Albertsons Trip

This is what I got for $41.68.
4 packages Tyson Anytizers
2 Digiorno pizzas
1 Dreyers ice cream
2 Wholly guacamole
1 doz eggs
2 Kikkoman soy sauce
5 Gatorades
6 Popcorn
6 liters pop
Some of these things were just an okay deal but the timing was great, I plan to use them for the Superbowl.
I took my friend with me to Albertsons to teach her how to coupon shop.
She was thrilled! She couldn't believe how much she saved. It is always so much fun to see someone on their first coupon trip. The are always thrilled and realize just how fun this can be. Not to mention how addicting. And that is even before her dear hubby saw what she got and how much she saved. She realized she had thrown money away when she tossed out her doublers....I know, I KNOW! She didn't know what they were. Don't worry though. She's learning. LOL!
Campbells soup was part of this sale but I make my soup from scratch now. Doing that always leads to leftovers so soup, any soup, from a can just doesn't make up for it.
I was glad to finally see a good sale at Albertsons. I miss the days of multiple trips. I used to be able to restock my pantry with their sale cycles. The great sales are fewer and farther in between. Now I just have to search a bit more for the deals. Needless to say this was a great week!

New Years Challenges

Happy New Years.
I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday season and look forward to a fabulous new year. After a couple of difficult years this house hold is hoping to have a fantastic year. We have lots of plans and things we (I) hope to finish. Dear hubby gets frustrated because of all my to do wish lists and I always have one project or another going on. It's just how I am. I always have to have something going on. With our new house we have some "need to" do projects. This year I am hoping to:
Finish our basement
Fence the backyard- gotta keep the dog and Matthew fenced in
Build a deck
We also are planning a trip to Disneyland this year. Our boys have never been. Dear hubby and I have been to Disney World and I went to Disneyland as a kid. We are now only about 8 hrs from Disneyland so we figured this would be the year to take the boys. They range in age from (by then) 3-11. Yep, I think it will a grand time.
I am hoping to teach a couple of couponing classes. I love saving money and getting great deals. I am not the best but several of my new friends and neighbors have been asking about it so....
I also MAY tackle a neighborhood project. We have great empty corner lot in our neighborhood. The 2 streets wrap around it in such a way that only one side is not bordered by a street. I think it would make a perfect little park. Our neighborhood is newer and struggling to finish selling the new homes after the fall of the economy. I'm not sure who ownes the ground but already have people offering resources and time to go toward the project. Yeah, kinda ambitious I know but there is no park in our neighborhood and I think it would be fantastic! So many people would be able to enjoy it's use....we'll see.
WW: 10# in 10 weeks
My personal goals for this year are to finally regain control of my weight. I had lost a lot then had 2 more boys and just haven't gotten back to where I want to be. I have a weak back (to much lifting as at the hospital) and I am feeling the effects of being overweight and out of shape. So I am going to make WW work for me again. I only do online as I don't care for meetings. So,  I'm starting the year off with 10# in 10 weeks challenge.
PYP: January- nessessities only
On PYP we are doing a challenge of only buying nessessities during the month of January. No extras, no eating out, minimal traveling= minimal gas usage. I will need to plan some freezer meals so dear hubby won't be tempted to order pizza on the nights I work. I am hoping to take the money we save and apply to debt. I want so badly to be out of debt. That is another of my goals for this year. By the end of the year I want to only have our house debt. Tough order but doable.
A Year of Homemade gifts
Okay dear family, listen up. This year I plan to have homemade gifts for birthdays, mothers day, and Christmas. It's another way to be more frugal and reach my other goals. If you watch closely you will see each of the gifts as I post them. You can even put your dibs on 'em if you wanna. I hope you will like what I have in mind and anything else I stumble upon.
So there you have it. After finishing my 52 projects everyone has wondered what I have planned next. Now you know. Bigger projects but still a full load as usual. We will see what I accomplish this year.
What about you? What plans do you have for the new year? Please share, lets inspire each other!

Case lot sales....

I love fall cooking AND the case lot sales. I love to know that I won't need to go to the store every week, I can just cook from my storage. This is the best time to stock up on those basic cooking supplies. The recipes that we enjoy are the ones with the supplies I stock up on. PYP is a fabulous resource to pick from each of the case lot sales coming up. Prepared LDS Family has a wonderful spreadsheet of cost comparisons. I just pulled it up and WOW! I'm impressed. I didn't get the flour at Macey's- they were out- but I'm glad I didn't, I will wait for the baked goods in Novemeber like she suggested. I just had to share. She has spent over 100 hours putting this together and is being so very generous to share her efforts.

Robin LOVES scones. She posted a yummy looking recipe for scones- using home storage of course. I plan to make some as a nice surprise for the love of my life to come home too.....
1 Tbsp yeast
1 cup water
1 Tbsp sugar
2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
Combine yeast and water. Let sit. Add remaining ingredients. Deep fry until golden brown.
I plan to double this recipe. Scones disappear quicly around here!
ENJOY!

Project 8 of 52: Jute wrapped cans

I found this idea on Brown Paper Packages . They were really easy, inexpensive, and green. Nothing beats trash to treasures. I think I will give these to a coworker who gave me the can lids and the empty cans. I think she will like them and enjoy them.

I am excited to go shopping tomorrow. Smiths and Albertsons are having great sales this week. But I will also be going to Lowes. I have found Knockoffwood.blogspot. What a great site! Ana makes simple blueprints for great furniture and gives instructions that even a gal like me can follow. My favorite part is that I can build these pieces in stages which really helps on the budget. And since I have the plans I don't have to worry about the style being discontinued or out of stock. I plan on doing pieces of the Cameron Collection for our family room. I hate having DVD's, Wii games, VHS's and toys all over. They contrast my desire for nice organization and clean lines. We are going to start with the cubby and draw and build from there. Then hopefully the movies and toys will be more neat and tidy. Plus I am drawn to the simetry of the plans. Maybe this year I will get my family room in line and really be able to enjoy it....

I also have plans to build pieces from the Logan collection for my crafty area. Once again I look forward to having supplies closed up in cupboards and drawer. "A place for everything, and everything in it's place" definantly describes me. The cherry on top is that I can do these projects on our current budget! No breaking the bank. Yeah, otherwise I would never get it done.

I am also searching for ideas for our bedroom redo later this year. The challenge of maintaining budget has really sparked my creativity as I search for severely frugal home decor. Dear SIL is the queen with this topic but I'm learning. I usually know what I like I just have to find a way to do it on a budget.

With all this in mind, hopefully I will get the wood to do my first piece. Wish me luck and I will post pictures when I get it done.

I have worked the last 5 of 6 days and I have to work again tomorrow night. Doesn't sound like a lot until I tell you these are 12 hour night shifts. UGH! I feel like I have lived at the hospital this week. Today I was really dragging. The weather was very cold and dreary too which doesn't help to wake you up or motivate you. Thankfully Robin has done an incredible job of keeping up with the housework. Needless to say I am WIPED OUT! Working so many days in a row has made it difficult to remember my project 365 and take a picture every day. I missed a couple but I think I will just use a generic picture. Or perhaps a picture of one of my projects...... On Sunday I usually scrapbook. Check out the slide show for the pages so far this year. I am excited to see it finished. It's gonna be great. I also think that it will help me learn more about picture taking. Maybe I will play with color techniques in PSE this week. How about a week of black and white photos? If I am lucky enough I may find one to use as wall art in the bedroom.......

Online deals

With Christmas just around the corner would you like to know how to have all your shopping done from home, delivered to your house AND get great deals? Just check our the Screaming deals online thread at PYP. I did most of my school shopping this way. I still love to shop in the store for myself but for my family- especially the boys- online is becoming my favorite way to shop. Besides, I get to do it in my jamies! I have gotten some amazing deals, toys, clothes, shoes, and lots more from online deals. Most of the time there is a code to get free shipping.

Check out this thread for awesome thrifty ideas. Tina, you are my inspiration and go to gal. Whenever I need to cut spending or just a thrift idea I know right where to turn. I have never seen someone mix thrift and style the way you do. You are truely amazing. Let the kids think all they want about the "cheap police", they will one day thank you. My thrifty idea for tonight is to take your empty clorox wipes containers, remove the cover and recover with at 6x12 sheet of paper. Add a ribbon or other embelishment and VOILA! you have a stylish bag holder; you know for your recycled bread bags, sandwich bags, or grocery bags. I am going to make several for the bathrooms, to keep garbage sacks in and one for the bread bags that make my drawer a disaster. I have also cabbaged onto baskets or containers left at the hospital with old flowers in them. Dump the flowers, add confetti (gonna try shredded comics), some candy and hand sanitizer, wrap and VOILA! a great teachers gift and I only bought the hand sanitizer. Oh, wait, I can make the sanitizer now too!! Even less $! I am loving this. I only wish I had more time. But alas, T-I-M-E is a 4-letter word!

One more, okay 2 more threads ya gotta check out.... Albertsons Sale and the Smiths Sale. They are both great. Smiths is left over from last week. I stocked up on Welches, canned tomatoes (gonna plant more of these next year), personal products, and Flintstones vitamins for the boys. Who knows what I bring home from the hospital so I have been pumping them full of immune boosters. Albertsons is a great deal this week too. From there I got soup, broth, yogurt, paper towels, chex mix and more. Great sales, now if only Lowe's would have a great sale on shelving so I have more room to put all my great finds. We are really starting to need more shelves.

I am trying to decide whether or not to can my left over pumpkins... I have heard the pumpkin crop was not good so the canned pumpkin is gonna be in short supply. We love pumpkin stuff.....Hmmmmm, perhaps on Saturday. I will be sorting clothes tomorrow and finishing laundry (is it ever REALLY done) tomorrow and then I work tomorrow night.

Laptop MIA

I sooo miss my laptop. They were backloged and hadn't gotten it finished when Robin called last week. I can't believe how dependant on technology we become. The pc is ok but now has mostly Robin's settings. *sigh* Hopefully we will get it back today. In the meantime I have been working on Josh's costume. He will be Harry Potter this year. I made his robe, black with red lining and a button front. Robin ordered a Gryffindor patch so hopefully that will come quickly. I was so excited. I think it turned out fabulous. Now I have to get Tyler's Slytherin robe done. Can you just picture it- Tyler as Malfoy? I think it will be great. I am also crocheting scarves of the appropriate colors. Josh was excited I think. At almost 10 you are becoming too cool to google over mom's handiwork. Tyler loved it and can't wait for his to be done. He changes his mind each day as to which costume he wants to wear. I gues that is the glory of being boy #3, you have more choices. Once again, when I get the laptop I will have to post pictures.

Then it will be on to Christmas projects. I love Christmas!! It is my favorite time of the year. I try to keep it simple. My favorite thing is sitting by the Christmas tree listening to Christmas music and sipping hot cocoa! No other time of the year gives me the warm fuzzies all over like the holiday's. Next week we be getting ready to put up Christmas decor. Yeah, I'm one of those. I don't really skip Thanksgiving, I am very thankful each year for family, friends, bountiful harvests, and that I can put Christmas up any time I want. I LOVE THE HOLIDAYS!

Saturday we canned 50 some odd bottles of applesauce and I still have 3 boxes left. We are going to store some through the winter and I am going to make some pie filling out of the others. Mom, I will get yours to you. You will love it! The apples were so sweet we hardly added any sugar. Robin's sister Tina was awesome. She spent her day with us and let me use her Victorio strainer; would never do applesauce without one. We get along so well she should be a sister instead of a sis-in-law. Robin loves this. He enjoys seeing the 2 of us laugh and joke and simply enjoy being together. I hope Tina enjoys it as much as I do. Josh, Keegan, A.J. and Nate all had a blast too.

Ok, this weeks coupon tip: ever notice the cycles of sales? Once you learn these you will be able to plan your shopping and stocking up based on these. For example, Quacker oatmeal products go on sale in February-ish and again about September. I know when it will be on sale again and thus am able to judge how much to buy. Also each September there are the "spagetti sauce wars" between Prego and Ragu. PYP has a great list of these cycles. Last year when we were looking to get our laptop we noticed all the sales at Christmas but it wasn't in our budget. We talked of getting one then to not miss the sales. Well, I checked out the cycle on electronics and computers and saw that it went into the first of the year. Yep- come January we were still able to get a great deal AND we did it within our budget plans. Gotta love it! Check out the list here: Sales Cycles , or just print it out. I have mine in the front of my coupon binder. You won't realize how often you will refer to it. Happy Shopping!

Albertsons shopping

This weeks coupon tip: When printing coupons online you can usually print 2 copies per link per computer. Smartsource has 3 sets of coupons, Group A, B, and C. Plus there are lots of other online sites for coupons. Here are some links within PYP...
Printable coupons
So I have a pc and laptop so for each link I get 4 coupons. I love this because usually you online coupons are higher value ones. It's great. In fact all the coupons I will use for this weeks sale are online ones. Dang I miss my laptop....

Our laptop is getting some adjustments and my pc doesn't read my SD disc. Don't get it but Robin is working on it so for now I have limited pictures to post. I soooo need my laptop back. Isn't it funny how quickly we depend on technology. Not to mention all my Christmas projects are on it. Hopefully it will be back next week. Keep you fingers crossed for me. In the meantime I am working so much that it may not matter. With the flu outbreaks and staff shortages there have been a lot more needs at the hospital. I am really struggling on how to balance home projects and self reliance with being the sole breadwinner at the moment. Robin is FABULOUS at helping around the house but there are just somethings that I was taught as a young girl to do to help our home while he was taught to work and provide for the family. This is our biggest challenge in relation to having our roles reversed. My kitchen floor needs stripped and rewaxed, there are Halloween costumes to make, and Christmas projects to get in full swing. Christmas is just around the corner you know. So when you all figure out the answer to this proverbial question of balance PLEASE let me know.

This week there is a great sale at Albertsons. Did you manage to get your shopping lists off PYP? Here is the list on PYP: Albies Shopping List You can always call me too and I can easily walk you through it if you need. I am still stocked on most sweets but I plan on getting some Cinnamon toast crunch for $0.65/each, Betty Crocker Potatoes- great for Rob's night to cook, and some Green Giant Steamers- yummy and quick. when you spend $25 you get $10 on your next visit so I will make sure I spend in $25 increments.

The other day I went to Walgreens and got: 8 jars Skippy PB, 2 jars Nutella, 3 Snickers bars, 5 bottles hydrogen peroxide and 4 jumbo packs of diapers. My total $38.46! Take off the diapers and I only spent $6.30! Yep, I was a happy shopper that day. Diapers worked out to be about $0.16 each I believe. I really needed some more Huggies. They seem to be the only thing that work for Matthew.

I also got some clearance toys at Shopko for Christmas. They didn't have any more of the sale items I wanted like a 5 pack of hotwheels cars for $3.88 so I got some rain checks. I had to make sure she knew I had a house of boys so that I didn't feel like I was hoarding or something. Most people don't get 8 or 10 of the same toy. :p

Josh is going to be Harry Potter for Halloween and Tyler is going to be Malfoy. Can you picture it? I am making Josh's cloak and hoping to make one for Ty as well. He will be happy in anything though, for which I am very thankful! Boys are easy!

Now I am looking for deals on Legos. Anyone see them please let me know. We have tons of Legos but they are great toys and the boys, even Tyler, love to build for hours. Dad is the biggest Lego fan but he will probably be getting another pair of work gloves. He has loved the ones I got him last year and asked for another pair. I think this is the kind, at least this is what they look like....

They keep his hands warm and protected without a lot of bulk. He hasn't given me any other ides so I will be on the look out. Maybe just a quiet night out just the 2 of us for Christmas.... I miss falling asleep in front of the Christmas tree- just the 2 of us......

What are you doing to have a thrifty Christmas???

Shopping list

So now it gets exciting! You have your coupons; you've got them organized now all you need is a nice list that matches all those coupons up to the sale items right?!? Well, here you go. Go to pinching your pennies (click the blinkie is on my blog). Under the deals by state forum you will find Idaho deals. Click on the store that suits you and print your list. Here is the link

http://www.pinchingyourpennies.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=30"

Reading through the forum is helpful too because people will post the unadvertised deals they find. I have made additional trips back to the store just based on the comments posted. Also, the Utah forum is usually busier than Idaho's and you can get the Albertsons list on Monday evening. This may change though with Utah Albertsons being sold but for now Shelley usually has the list up by Monday evening. I love this cuz then I can plan my shopping budget for the week and whether or not to take advantage of the current sale before it changes Wednesday morning.

PYP teams up with Grocery smarts to provide shopping lists to other stores as well. I haven't used this option as much but I think it has great potential. Click on the grocery guide tab at the top of the PYP page. Then just follow the instructions to getting the list for your area. Try these links. (hopefully I did it right)....
http://www.pinchingyourpennies.com/groceryguide.php
http://grocerysmarts.com/idaho/lists/splashg83ro1.php

Once you get your list all you need to pull your coupons for what you want. On the list you will see a star rating, the sale item, sale price, coupons available if any both in the newspaper and online links, and the end price. 3 star ratings are Walmart type prices, nothing big. 4 star is a good price but 5 star is a great price. The 5 star items are what you want to stock up on. Buy everything you want and can. Now you will have 10 boxes of quacker hot cereal and won't have to buy it again until it is on sale again which with Quacker won't be until February- ish. I can handle $0.75 a box much better than $2.50 or $3. What about you?

How easy is that? Really, guys, I work full time nights. I don't have time to sink into coupons but when someone else is helping make the list- THAT I CAN DO! Before long you all are going to realize how plan ordinary I am. I am giving away all my secrets.....I guess it's ok, you're all worth it. Let me know if you have questions. Next time I will give you tips on the internet coupons....

Organization

So did you get your coupons coming? There are lots of ways to collect them if you don't decide to get a subscription to the paper. But, now you need a way to keep track of all the great coupons you are getting. It doesn't do much good to get the coupons if you can't ever find the one you need when you need it. There are several ways to organize your coupons. 2 of the most popular ways is the file method and the binder method. The file method: take your inserts and band them together and write the date on it with a black marker. The benefit here is you don't spend time cutting them all at once. The downside is you won't have them with you for any unadvertised deals you may run a crossed, rather you only cut the ones you need for your shopping list.

I prefer the binder method. The benefit is having all my coupons with me, but I spend about an hour on Sunday clipping my coupons. I don't clip everything, only the products I use. I love this. There have been several times I forgot I needed something or else I run into a great deal unexpectedly. It's great to already have them. I take my binder to the store almost every time I go.

It's best to use a binder with a zipper to hold in any loose coupons. In the front, I have a zipper pocket for pens, scissors, calculator etc. Then there are dividers with stores and categories. I use trading card sheet protectors to place the coupons in. This way I can see what the coupon is for and usually when the exp date is. I also have a list of typical prices which you can find on pinchingyourpennies.com. Here is a picture of mine to give you an idea.

Now decide which system will work for you and get them organized and get ready for the next tip. It's gettin' good!

Coupon 101

I will be teaching another coupon class tonight but I am finding a problem. I have lots of people asking about how to find great deals but fewer and fewer people coming to my classes. I know everyone is sooo very busy, life just kinda happens and messes up our plans. So I thought I would post tips, step by step, over a few days on how to save. Then you can read at your leisure and follow the steps yourself. By the way, if anyone has a group that you would like to get together I would gladly come to you to teach a class. I don't charge- so what do I get out of it you ask? Nothing really, just the satisfaction of helping others. I have been blessed in many ways and I just enjoy seeing others go WOW! at a great deal. Consider it the "Pay it Forward" philosophy. Plus, I just love sharing how I survive with only $100 or less a week for groceries, hygiene products, paper products including diapers, and household cleaners for my family of 6.

So tip #1: Get your coupons!
In order to work the coupons ya gotta have COUPONS. They mostly come from the paper. The Post Register has a "coupon" or "pinching pennies" deal where you get a daily paper but on Sunday you get 5 copies for $17/month on auto pay. Now, why would you want 5 Sunday papers? To get 5 copies of each coupon!!! Then when a great sale comes along I can stock up with my 5 coupons then sit back and enjoy until another great deal comes along. This is how you build your WORKING food storage. It will start to accumulate really quickly with 5 coupons. I spend about an hour on Sunday clipping my coupons AND filing them into my binder (more on this later) so it is not too time consuming either. The other places to look for coupons is in the mail, along the store aisles, or by trading with friends and online. Rebekah likes Suave shampoo, I like Pantene, so we swap. 10 Pantene coupons for the next sale YAHOOO!! It's win/win for both of us. Sound good? Get your subscription to the paper- YES it's worth it. Rebekah watched me for a couple of months before realizing she couldn't afford NOT to get the coupon subscription. You definantly get your money back.
Watch for how to organize your coupons next.... and leave me a note and tell me if this is helpful or not. I sometimes wonder who, if anyone, ever reads my wanderings...

Shopping with Channel 3 news

So after my letter the the editor came out in yesterdays Post Register I got a call from channel 3 news. Hasti wanted to interview me about coupons. She came over, I ran through my coupon info and showed her my storage room and the food storage we have been able to build through using coupons. This morning was test time. Could I produce the savings I had been talking about. I told them that on Monday I did my shopping at Smith's and saved 93%. I only spent $9.56. I was way excited about that one. We went to Smith's; I bought 38 items and spent $30.96. Not too bad. I think, I hope, I made believers out of Hasti and Tommy. Hasti will let me know when her piece will air and I will pass it on. It was kind of fun and totally unexpected. I had been thinking someone needed to do a story on PYP and the free resource that it is- I just didn't think I would be in on the story. I think it will be great and excited to see how everything turns out. Hopefully some people can take the information and benefit from it. It has been great for my family to have our grocery bill go down and benefit from other non-food bargains as well!

Huggies deal

We found some Huggies at the Pocatello Walgreens. Here is how it turned out for me: 6 packs for $14 out of pocket. Then I got $20 in R.R. back.

1st transaction:
3 packs x $10=$30
-$5 off coupons x3=15
-$15 from gift card for February rebates
+$10 RR back

2nd transaction
3 packs x$10=$30
-$5 off coupons x3=$15
used the rest of my gift card, a couple of $$
then paid $14
+$10 RR back

Not too bad. They only had size 6 left but I can exchange them later for 3's. At this price I was thrilled!

My latest shopping haul!
You just have to love getting free groceries. Since July I have been using pinchingyourpennies.com to help with my shopping. In that time I have dropped over $1000 from our food/hygiene/paper products budget and have built a years supply. I love to go grocery shopping and see what kind of deals I can get. This week Albertsons is having a General Mills deal, buy 10 get $10 back for your next shopping trip. A lot of the stuff is snack/sugar foods but hey, my boys like these things too. We have our share of healthy food but comfort food is part of the pantry as well. So here is my latest deals. I was soooo excited this week. My best was paying only $0.62 and saving $49.57! Here is my total.
22 cake mixes
7 brownie mixes
16 chex mix/cheerios mix
10 progresso soups
10 Pillsbury grands biscuits
3 Nature Valley granola bars
