I love these mason jar soap dispensers! I wanted one from first sight. I however didn't wanna pay the price for just the lid. So I did what any self respecting crafter would do, I made my own.
I grabbed a mason jar and started to cut a hole in the top. Not a tough job but I needed a wide one and wanted to limit the number of sharp edges. Needle nosed pliers worked great to widen and smooth out the hole.
I had a bottle of Bath and Body works foaming kitchen soap to use. The top was great for a smooth finish. I just super glued the rim of the pump to the flat lid.
Add a little silicone to help seal the pump and the rough edges. Hot glue works well too. Make sure to let this dry completely.
Add a bit of paint for the finish of your choice. I would have preferred a hammered nickle finish but of course couldn't find that spray can (until I finished the project!) hidden at the back of the shelf.
Black would have to do for now.
I tried a matte gold too. Not bad but I like the black or hammered nickle better.
I love them. And they work great. I'm putting this on my Christmas gift list. I am shooting for a homemade Christmas this year. Dear family, you'd better get your wishes in when you can!

These are so cute! I have seen jar soap dispensers around but they use the regular hand soap. I love B&B soap and this answers my question of how to make one for their soaps! Stopping by from Lil' Luna.

I tried it but the paint chips when you push down on the dispenser. Am i supposed to use a top coat? Super cute idea!

ReplyDeleteI didn't have to use a top coat but it might help. Just make sure it is cured and well dried. I have been able to scrub mine to keep it clean without problems.....

I think we need to know the exact wording and Brand of spray paint you used. You know, like "Krylon Super, Never Comes Off In your Entire Life Paint, Glossy!" I know I need to know exactly what I'm looking for when I get into that sea of cans...........

ReplyDeleteLaurie, I just used a largeish nail and hammered a hole to start the cutting process. If you use small needle nose pliers and kind of curl/cut in the direction of the curve it helps. Thankfully I usually have lots of flat jar lids that just get tossed during canning season so I could try again if the hole got too big. You can also use the empty soap container to mark your hole for a guide. Hope this all helps.

ReplyDeleteKellie, I just used a Dial foam dispenser. I needed the soap anyway. Once you have to foam dispenser you can make your own soap or rather dilute your regular soap. HTH
ReplyDeleteOr, just buy the B&BW kind that has the foamy dispenser and clip the 'straw' part to fit into the Ball Jar. I use the Dial one, too, in a different jar and just use the same Palmolive Anti-Bacterial with more water than soap, and it works out great.

ConnieG, I just used a pint size mason jar but the great thing is you can use what ever size you want. If you are making several just buy a box of them at your local store. Thrift stores often have them in their glass section too. Keep watching, I plan to do a follow up of this post later this month.
DeleteHow do you paint it? All at the same time or the ring, lid and pump separate? What brand of paint did you use?
ReplyDeleteBrenna, I believe I used Krylon Indoor. I sprayed them with the lid and pump. I just held the pump by the straw piece. Then carefully set it inside your jar. Krylon dries in 15 minutes but I let mine dry over night. I know some have had problems with paint flaking but I have been able to scrub mine without problems. Good luck.
